 Tinnitus Treatment

Tinnitus is a ringing, buzzing, hissing, roaring, humming or pulsating sound in the ears or head in the absence of an external sound. It can be constant or on and off. It can fluctuate and can be worse in quiet. It is often associated with a hearing loss on an audiogram but not always. Most patients who notice tinnitus are not greatly bothered by it. About 15-20% of people with tinnitus are severely bothered by it.

Tinnitus is a symptom with many potential causes. If you have any tinnitus it is important to see an Ear Nose and Throat Physician for a complete medical evaluation to determine the cause of your tinnitus. This is to identify any underlying physical problems that might be treatable or need treatment to help your tinnitus.

At audio-vestibular clinic we work closely with an ENT physician and after medical evaluation we have the option of tinnitus treatment with Tinnitus Retaining therapy (TRT) in our multidisciplinary clinic which includes Dr Brian Williams ENT Physician trained in TRT and Ms K Lo audiologist. Dr Williams undertakes TRT Counselling and Ms Lo undertakes fitting of hearing aids with sound generators, or only sound generators as indicated to the required prescription . Our results show that in our clinic 95% of patients with bothersome tinnitus (catastrophic, severe and moderate) who finish the course of treatment reduce the impact of their tinnitus to mild, slight or less on Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI).
